    Digital or litho

    What is the difference between digital printing and litho printing?

    Digital printing puts your file straight onto the paper with no printing plates, so short and medium runs are quick to set up and every copy can be different.

    Digital printing. The press prints from your PDF with toner or ink, with no plates to make and little make-ready. That is why a run of 50 brochures is as straightforward as a run of 5,000, why proofs come back quickly, and why each copy can carry a different name, address or number (variable data printing).

    Litho printing. Offset litho transfers ink from metal plates via a rubber blanket. Making plates and setting up the press takes time, so litho usually makes sense for very long runs of the same item.

    What we do. Sooner Than Later prints digitally. Most commercial printing that businesses, agencies and public bodies order today, from business cards to annual reports, falls into the short and medium runs that digital handles best.     We print on a Xerox iGen 5 and a Xerox Iridesse, both on our production floor in Dún Laoghaire.

    Xerox iGen 5. Our main digital press, fitted with extra colour cartridges so we can match spot colours more closely than standard four-colour print. That matters when your brand colour has to look the same on a business card, a brochure and a pull up banner.

    Xerox Iridesse. Adds gold, silver, white and clear inks to full colour in a single pass. Metallic and white inks lift invitations, covers and packaging, and white ink lets you print on coloured stocks. See metallic printing for examples.

    Finishing happens in the same building: trimming, folding, binding, lamination, foiling, spot UV, embossing, die-cutting and perforation.
