In the Internet age, why is direct mail still popular?
There is, and will always be a demand for direct mail marketing. Why?
- In a world of advertising saturation, where people ignore emails, can bypass advertisements on the television, most people still open their post every day. If you send a well-written piece of printed material to a customer or a potential customer, your letter will not have to scream for attention the way it would if you used other media.
- A well executed print direct advertising campaign can offer a positive return on investment as the message is not hidden with over complicated branding. Direct Mail Marketing is straight to the point, it offers a product, service or event and explains how to get the offered product, service or event. Unlike with email you can be 100% sure that it will look as you want.
- Direct mail can reach those demographics who are not spending as much time online. And those can be the people who are less advertising fatigued.
- The direct response can be measured directly. For example, if you send out one thousand solicitations by print mail, and one hundred respond to the promotion; you can safely say campaign led directly to 10% direct responses.
- Interestingly, CEOs and Marketing Managers tend to take much greater care when they go the trouble of getting something printed, than when they put just information on their website. So in fact the very process of printing can sharpen your focus as to the particular message you want to convey about your brand.
Saying that, the success of your direct mail marketing will be greatly enhanced when you take steps to reinforce your offline (print) message with what you have on your website, or in your e-mail newsletters.
